A TOTAL of 26 Wayfarers, including local boats and others from as far afield as Waldringfield in Suffolk and the Medway, converged on Roadford Lake Sailing Club for the Wayfarer Western Championships over the golden jubilee weekend.
The racing was preceded by a training day on Saturday. More than 20 enthusiastic sailors participated with sunny and breezy conditions for the practice starts and races.
On Sunday and Monday there was a series of five races for the championship with the best four results counting.
John and Liz Reed won two of Sunday's three races, putting them in the lead. Overnight rain did not deter the fleet on Monday morning although the lively breezes led to a few capsizes of both experienced and novice crews.
Another husband and wife team, Robin and June Barker winning both races, took Monday's honours. However, the consistent sailing of local father and son team Phil and Philip Lowndes from Starcross YC, gaining four second places, gave them a well deserved overall championship trophy.
On Sunday evening weary sailors came alive to the sound of the Hard Place Soul and Blues Band and enjoyed drinks.
Camping and a barbecue beside the lake were much appreciated by visitors and their children who took full advantage of the safe environment.
Roadford Lake welcomes families at any time where the sailing and watersport facilities are suitable for novices and the experienced alike, all the year round.
