ONE of the first women to be in military uniform and arrive at Okehampton Station took a walk back in time, when she returned to the same spot 70 years on.

Mrs Joyce Fearon, who lives in Salisbury, was just 17 years old when she joined the ATS in 1938, just before the outbreak of the war.

Then a Miss Joyce Shaddick, she was the first women to arrive at the station in uniform, in 1939, where the local paper took a photograph of her arriving off the train.

Mrs Fearon, who was recently visiting her daughter in Okehampton, used to live in cottages at Meldon Quarry, which were demolished 30 years ago.
