A PROJECT encouraging people to visit the National Trust's estate at Cotehele by train has been shortlisted in the 2009 National Community Rail Awards.
Devon and Cornwall Rail Partnership and the National Trust have worked together to encourage people to visit Cotehele by taking the Tamar Valley Line train from Plymouth to Calstock and then a scenic walk, much of it along the river, of just over a mile.
Some 60,000 leaflets have been produced, including a map of the walking route.
These are being distributed through First Great Western stations across their network, including London Paddington and Bristol Temple Meads.
There are also station posters and a map and descriptive board has been placed at Calstock Station.
In addition, the walking route has been reviewed and improved.
Rebecca Catterall from Devon and Cornwall Rail Partnership said: 'We are thrilled that this project has been shortlisted for an award. The scenic train journey to Calstock is a day out in itself but combining it with a walk and a visit to Cotehele is a great way to enjoy this special valley in an environmentally friendly way.'
Charmian Saunders, Cotehele's visitor services manager said: 'Reducing our environmental footprint is hugely important to the National Trust and this partnership is another step towards that.
'Any visitors arriving by train will receive a discount into the house and garden, so not only are our visitors keeping fit but they are also saving money.'
The National Community Rail Awards ceremony will take place in Carlisle on Friday September 25.
