The Lions Club of Tavistock and Okehampton- based Wren Music are joining forces to stage a new event in Tavistock. Called 'Feet First', it is a replacement for the annual Children's Folk Dance Festival, with which the club has been involved since 2004. The festival, which for many years had been successfully organised by Tavistock Folk Dance Club, was attracting fewer participants so the Lions decided to approach Wren Music to see how the event could be revitalised and expanded. Folk and community arts development charity Wren Music organises various traditional music events around the county which this year will include a 'Piping Hot Bagpipe Weekend' in Okehampton at the end of February and the annual Baring-Gould Folk Festival in late October. Wren is also involved with many local schools and community groups in providing workshops for song, music and dance where it aims to encourage the enjoyment and a better understanding of traditional music and its related disciplines. With Wren's experience and contacts within Devon's schools and dance clubs, the Lions are convinced that 'Feet First' will create a great deal of interest especially as it will include a wider range of activities than in previous years and also because it is free to the participants. The event, which is mainly focused at primary school children of 8 years and over from the West Devon and Plymouth areas, will be held at Tavistock College on Saturday March 15 starting at 10am and finishing at 2pm. The morning will consist of a choice of three participatory workshops in music, dance and singing. The musicians can have a go at learning music to play for dancing. Wren will provide a whole range of instruments for the children to try or they can bring their own instrument. The dancers will be able to participate in traditional dancing and create their own dances, and the singing workshop will help the children find out about their voices and learn new songs to which the others could dance. All the workshops will be led by professional and experienced musicians and no experience is necessary for the children wishing to participate. During the afternoon session there will be music from visiting groups from around Devon but those attending have yet to be confirmed. Wren will also be contacting the schools and dance clubs with an invitation for them to devise their own dance which can be performed during the afternoon session.
