A TOTAL of 43 people attended the first meeting of the new beginners' group of the jogging club run by Tavistock Athletic Club.

Organiser Keith Bowles said he was delighted but also overwhelmed by the response. 'We had certainly not anticipated such large numbers, but we have the personnel to cope.

It is gratifying to see so many people take their fitness seriously and that they see jogging as part of their fitness regime.'

The first week consisted of walking with spurts of brisk walking, but from week two the jogging started and will build up gradually, with the eventual aim of everyone being able to jog at their own pace non-stop for 20 minutes.

The last few weeks has seen an increase in the number of juniors, and with 80 of them and 35 other seniors, some 158 attended the club on the 23rd, which must be a record.

However, new members of all ages and abilities are always welcome, particularly over 18s interested in track and field and road running.

The jogging club has two groups for existing joggers with all the groups meeting at 6.15pm on Tuesdays at Tavistock College — opposite the main entrance.

If the number of beginners continues to be so high their group will be split to make it easier to give individual advice during each session.
