AN AMERICAN walker has appealed for fellow ?beasts? to join her on the Dartmoor Beast charity walk taking place next week to raise funds for a cancer charity.
Jeanne Peterson is currently working as a volunteer at the Museum of Dartmoor Life in Okehampton, but originally hails from North East America, though latterly she had been living in Montreal, Canada.
Jeanne has teamed up with another walker to tackle the 20km moorland challenge, but they are looking for at least two more walkers to complete the minimum number of entrants needed to enter a team.
The Dartmoor Beast Walk is raising money for CLIC ? Cancer and Leukaemia in Childhood. The walkers will set out from the Fox and Hounds in Bridestowe on Saturday, August 16.
Jeanne, a mother of three sons and grandmother of two boys, will be joined on the walk by Sally Holden from Exeter. The maximum number of entrants per team is eight, so Jeanne and Sally can accommodate between two and six more people.
Jeanne is also keen to attract more sponsorship as each team member needs to raise sponsorship of at least £100 to take part.
The walkers will cary a 10kg backpack on their shoulders and will have to reach nine checkpoints along the route to complete the challenge.
Jeanne is an accomplished walker and has hiked the Appalachian Trail, climbed in the Highlands of Scotland and climbed Mt Washington in New Hampshire.
She said she was supporting the event because she had lost members of her family to cancer. ?Cancer affects us all in one way or another,? she said.
As well as the 20km walk, there is a 30km walk with a 15-kilo rucksack, also starting off from the Fox and Hounds on the same morning.
Jeanne said she would welcome anyone to the team, male or female, although they must be aged over 18. Some walking experience will also be necessary to tackle the challenge. She is also keen to hear from potential sponsors. Jeanne can be contacted by e-mail at: [email protected]">[email protected] or on 01837 53832 or 07905 997311.
