A NEW mother from Ottery wanted to show her appreciation for the care and support of staff in a maternity unit at Derriford Hospital by raising money to help their work. Jane Badge, 27, held an open house with her friends and family along with the star of the show, baby Jack. Jack, who was born five weeks prematurely in October, came into the world at 4lbs 6ozs. Jane is full of praise for the staff on the transitional care ward of the hospital's maternity unit, who helped mother, son and father Pete, through the difficult time. She said: 'I really appreciated their support and especially Jack who needed help with his breathing as his lungs were a little sticky. They also gave me great emotional support at the time.' Along with her mother, Esme Stacey, and her mother-in-law Carolyn Badge, the ladies organised the open house where coffee and cakes were on sale, a secret auction was held for a teddy bear and friends sold jewellery and cards they had hand-made. There was even a little display to honour the baby's arrival and a toy rabbit, which Jane said was the same size as little Jack when he was born. Later this month Jane will be handing a cheque for £262 to the unit along with some baby clothes she and her friends have knitted.
