A WEIGHTY 79 kilograms of foreign coins was presented to Buckland Monachorum Cancer Research Campaign committee recently — collected by Royal Naval staff at Devonport.
Leftover francs, pesestas and drachmas have been raining into buckets placed around Devonport naval base by staff and crews of ships and submarines since the summer
The coins — estimated to total around £5,000 — will be counted and converted into sterling by the Cancer Research Campaign.
The decision to support the charity was taken by the Naval Base Charities Committee.
Commander Chris Thorpe, chairman of the committee, said: 'We were pleased to support this worthwhile charity, whim aims to defeat all types of cancer that could affect any one of us at any time.
'I'd like to thank the people in the base and ships and submarines, who helped organise the collection and all those who parted with the remainder of their holiday spending money.'
