Tavistock College student Sarah, 16, is thrilled to have been invited to play with the band which will be performing at the China Fleet Club, Saltash.
The band is being led by musical director Ray McVay and the Saltash venue is part of their UK tour.
'I was pleased. Very pleased!' said Sarah. 'It has been a challenge. It's a different way of playing — because it's big band style rather than brass band style. It is more mellow.'
The piece she has to play is 'Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White' — which Sarah describes as a 'laid-back' piece.
Sarah took up the cornet because her brother David, who is with the Saltash Town Band, played it and she liked the sound. Previously she played the flute.
She was with the Stannary Brass Band for about six years where she was principal cornet.
Sarah has been playing occasionally with the Saltash Town Band for the past two years and, for the last two months, has been a full time member.
Ray McVay contacted the Sue Hooper Charitable Foundation which is promoting the evening. He was offering a prestigious solo slot to a young musician who had to be under the age of 21. Sue Hooper contacted the Saltash Town Band and they recommended Sarah.
'I think the invitation is to show that music is for all ages and also to encourage any talented youngsters,' said Sarah, who would like a career with music.
She says music tutor Neil Ellis is the main influence on her playing.
'I will be nervous on the night — but I will have a lot of support from family and friends,' she said.
However, being in a brass band rather than a rock band does produce some gentle teasing from colleagues at school.
'I get the mick taken because I'm in a brass band — so I take the mick out of the music they listen to,' she said. 'I just enjoy doing what I do so I don't let any comments bother me. I like a lot of rock stuff — but I also turn on Classic FM!'
The concert at the China Fleet Club starts at 7.30pm. Tickets, £10.50, are available from Sue Hooper on (01752) 843073; Maestro's Music Ltd, Ebrington Street, Plymouth (01752) 263069, and Saltash Radio, Fore Street, Saltash (01752) 842644.
