A CALLINGTON grandfather, along with his son and two eldest grandchildren, has raised more than £2,500 for the Prostate Cancer Charity.
Peter Moss, a retired Barclays Bank operations manager and ex-member of the Dartmoor Rescue Group, took part in the charity's London Tour Cycle Ride. Together with his son Richard and grandchildren Charlotte and Cameron, Peter cycled 12km and raised more than £1,800.
The money was matched, up to £750, by Barclays' community investment programme 'Charity Begins at Work'.
David Bond, community relations officer for Barclays, said: 'This is a fantastic example of a retired member of Barclays' staff fundraising with his local community to achieve something which we hope will make a real and lasting difference.'
Around £200 was donated by St Joseph's School in Launceston, where Mr Moss also worked.
The family were supported along the route by Peter's friends from the rescue group, as well as school friends of Charlotte and Cameron, who also raised money for the cause.
Mr Moss, a keen walker, was diagnosed with prostate cancer last year. His wife Kathryn said her husband was fortunate that the cancer was discovered in the very early stages, and praised the care and support both Peter and the family received.
'The care Peter received from Derriford Hospital was absolutely fantastic, particularly during his eight-and-a-half-weeks of radiotherapy. Peter wanted to raise money for the charity because of the support we received from them — we had a qualified nurse we could contact and they were so good at explaining things to us throughout Peter's illness.'
The route taken by the participants in the London Tour Ride was cycled later that day by professional cyclists taking part in the Tour of Britain, which also raises funds for the Prostate Cancer Charity.
Next year Peter and his son Richard say they hope to complete a leg of the professional race. One section of the race is between Tavistock and Glastonbury, a distance of 109 miles.
