I AM writing in response to the article in the Okehampton Times with regard to Geoffrey Cox MP and his plan to campaign for a national celebration of St George's Day.
Compare that with the letter sent by Lindy Roberts (February 17) in which she attacks our Judeo/ Christian heritage because it is one where mis-interpretation of biblical texts leads to oppression.
This year is the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible. Surely it is time for us to take stock and think again about our history as a nation and the way in which the Bible has shaped our identity and culture.
Lindy Roberts is right about the way in which the Bible has been so interpreted that evil has been justified. That said, many of us have found that as we base our lives on what is believed to be the inspired word of God, and test everything by comparing teaching with that of Christ, then we lay a firm foundation for dealing with all that life can throw at us.
There are nine denominations represented in Okehampton. Christians attending these churches will no doubt have their own special experiences relating to the Bible. I think that it would be good to share our thoughts with one another through your letters page.
