Tavistock 2nd XI 0

Bodmin 5

THIS was always going to be a difficult game for Tavistock Seconds hockey team because Bodmin had been recently relegated to the league and were looking for the automatic promotion.

Within the first minutes it was clear Bodmin were fit and skilful. Their passing was accurate and the forwards had the ability to find space to put the Tavistock defence under pressure.

Tavistock managed to soak up the attacks until the Bodmin centre forward lifted the ball beyond the reach of goalkeeper Moyse.

The next 15 minutes found the Tavistock goal under constant pressure which resulted in Bodmin consolidating their position by scoring three more goals.

Tavistock then began to play the hockey which brought promotion last year with Newman snr and Young winning the midfield, allowing the forwards opportunity to take shots on goal.

During half-time, Young told the Tavistock team to ignore the scoreline and concentrate on the basics.

The players took his advice and played excellent controlled hockey. Alford, Newman jnr and Kelly combined with the experience of Townsend to put the Bodmin goalkeeper under pressure but without success.

Bodmin scored the final goal from a short corner which eluded Young's stick by an inch or two.
