TAVISTOCK mayor Jenny Metcalf has called on the town?s businesses to support the chamber of commerce?s plan to make Tavistock ?blooming lovely? this summer. Tavistock and district chamber wants 150 hanging baskets to go up around the town and is putting £2,500 into the scheme to encourage shops and offices to take part. The baskets are environmentally friendly and low maintenance, and will only need watering twice a week. The plan is for them to be on display from mid -June until mid-September. The chamber will fund the £25 cost of the special brackets to support the hanging baskets. Businesses will pay £35 for the basket full of plants and £10 to have the bracket fixed. The work of preparing the baskets, putting them up and taking them down and fixing the brackets will be carried out by specialist company Plantscape. Cllr Metcalf said: ?This is a marvellous idea and I am giving it my full support. I would love to see Tavistock blooming. It would make our town even more cheerful and attractive.? Nigel Eadie, chamber treasurer, has warned that businesses need to act quickly to take advantage of the scheme.?We have had a good response but we need more businesses to take up our offer. We really need bookings by May 19 to make sure that the baskets can be prepared.? The Times has joined the scheme by ordering two hanging baskets, and Horrabridge-based public relations firm PR Dogs Limited has offered to pay for two baskets to be put up in the town.
