THE future of Tavistock and District Chamber of Commerce now looks secure — despite recent fears that it could close.
Following an emergency meeting to rally eleventh-hour support on January 25, nominations for chairman and executive committee members have been received.
Chamber president Neil Woolcock said yesterday he had received one nomination for chairman and seven nominations for executive positions.
A letter has been sent out listing the nominations and should be received by members today (Thursday).
'The meeting made people realise that the chamber would not be allowed to disappear. There is a lot of good will in Tavistock but apathy was setting in without a doubt,' said Mr Woolcock.
'We highlighted what the chamber did and were delighted with the response.'
As well as the nominations the meeting also attracted ten new members.
'We're lucky that the chamber has been very well run in the past and throughout recent years a huge amount of time and commitment has been put in by a few members.
'We are stronger than ever. I'm sure the new executive will have new ideas for promoting the chamber and the interests of businesses within our area,' said Mr Woolcock.
He said with some of the members of the old executive still 'on board' there would be a 'continuity of expertise and know-how that will carry us forward'.
The chamber will meet at the Bedford Hotel on Monday at 7.30pm to ratify the nominations.
