THE visible effects of vandalism are depressing; not only do they quickly stifle any glimmer of feel good factor that dares to stir, but a failure to put things right quickly seems to attract further acts.

Three sites are particularly exasperating. Like many town residents I am sometimes hazy as to who is responsible for what, but for the life of me I cannot see why: ?

1) Bloke with spade could not remove the broken remnants of tree from either side of St James Chapel.

2) Chap with a couple of sheets of panelling could not replace the two broken on the new Fairplace toilets.

3) Lad with can of paint could not obliterate the graffiti below Jim the Hiker; rumour has it that when a certain individual approached the relevant authority and offered to do it himself it they could supply the small quantity of paint needed he was told ?The council couldn?t possibly afford that?, although I find this hard to believe.

Is anybody in there listening?
