I WAS most interested to see that prospective Conservative candidate Geoffrey Cox was reported in your edition of June 22 to —

1, oppose metrication of weights and measures

2, oppose the surrender of the £pound

3, demand a referendum before any more rights and powers are given up to the EU

4, seek re-negotiation of those that already exist.

1, 2 and 3 are indeed admirable. Is 2 forever? 4 would also be wonderful if possible. Legal opinion says that it is not, since 'irreversible', 'irrevocable' and words and phrases to the same effect pepper the relevant treaties.

The only positive and possible way of achieving 4, is to withdraw from the EU completely and negotiate new trading and non-political agreements with the EU as a whole or individual members.

Since Europe is the only one of the five continents with which we traded in deficit last year there is no doubt that the various members would be anxious to continue trading with us.

Is this, therefore, the official policy of Mr Cox's party? Have they at last recognised they should 'let the people speak'?
