PLANS for a subterranean shop and post office in Exbourne will be discussed by West Devon Borough Council next Tuesday.

The application by the Exbourne Community Shop Committee follows the closure of the village post office and stores last year and the desire by the community to keep a facility in Exbourne.

The group behind the scheme has been encouraged by the level of support for a temporary post office in the village hall, which has been running for several months now.

The innovative building, which would also house a cafe and be adaptable enough to offer such activities as computing and table tennis, has been recommended for approval by planning officers.

Three letters of objection have been submitted to the borough council with one describing the building as a 'Telly Tubby Shop' and out of keeping with the Conservation Area. Lack of parking and road safety issues have also been raised.
