LOCAL charity Tamwed (Tamil/West Devon), which supports and links with some of the poorest communities in rural South India, is holding an Indian Breakfast on Saturday, October 18, in Calstock Village Hall.
The meal will be similar to the type of breakfast eaten everyday throughout South India, and will take place between 10am and noon, costing £6.50 per person, £4 for children.
Two of Tamwed's committee members, Colin and Maria Terry, have been raising funds for a project to tackle severe health problems that have recently discovered to be affecting tribal families in remote villages of the Nilgiri Hills.
In November they will be taking part with community health workers in a sponsored walk between 10 of the villages to research the cause of the problems and identify those with the greatest need of support. Tamwed will then work with a local partner organisation to tackle the issues that arise.
Tamwed was launched in 2005 after the Tsunami that had a devastating effect on those living in coastal regions of South India. Its founders, who were familiar with the area and people, wanted to offer financial support as well as establishing links between the UK and India. The relationship with organisations and people developed over the years with Tamwed providing a relatively small amount of financial support for projects that had a great impact for thousands of some of the poorest rural families.
