BY popular demand, a South Indian breakfast will be enjoyed in Calstock Village Hall on Saturday.
Local charity Tamwed, which supports impoverished communities in South India, is holding the fund-raiser on the morning of January 16. Places for the event, which has previously sold out in advance, are available to be booked now.
Tamwed works with two community organisations in remote areas of Tamil Nadu where voluntary community health workers have been trained to tackle health problems in the villages where they live.
One such volunteer is Parvathy, from the Irula tribe, who lives in the forests of the Nilgiri Hills. Many tribal people suffer from anaemia and stomach disorders caused by a poor diet and a lack of basic hygiene. Parvathy and her 19 colleagues aim to reduce the high rate of infant and maternal mortality in tribal villages.
It costs £10 a month to support Parvathy, with a further £10 paying for training and other costs by the community organisation that Tamwed works with in the Nilgiri Hills.
The meal must be booked in advance by calling 01822 832897 or by sending an e-mail to [email protected]
