THIS year’s first ever Tavistock Young Artists’ Exhibition in Tavistock Town Hall, had more than 300 entries across a wide age range, from 3 to 19.
Ten schools were involved: Whitchurch Pre-School, Milton Abbot, Tavistock, Whitchurch, Mary Tavy and Brentor, Lewtrenchard, Lifton, Mount Kelly Preparatory School, Mount Kelly College and Tavistock College. There were also entries from Princetown Youth Club and individual ones received through Tavistock Library.
The opening evening was attended by around 200 children and families, with two minibus loads from Princetown Youth Club funded by the exhibition. Many of the young people there also joined in making carnival masks, organised jointly by Tavistock Lions and West Devon Art Workshops. Sixteen prizes, donated by local businesses, were awarded by Tavistock Mayor Mandy Ewings and Vicky Worthy of DAISI (Devon Arts In Schools Initiative) for work judged to be the most playful and original.
Vicky said: ’I was so impressed with the variety and creativity of the work that was on show. It was clear that all the children had taken a real pride in what they had created and for them to see their work exhibited in such a stunning location and in such a professional manner, really gave them a huge sense of achievement.
‘You could see it in their faces and how they talked about their work. What a great success and I am looking forward to next year’s exhibition.’
Sponsor and County Councillor Debo Sellis added: ‘I am amazed at the standard of work and the exhibition. This is even better than I imagined it would be when I was approached for support back in December. Well done to everyone involved!’
Organiser Andy Cairns praised the enthusiasm of local teachers and youth club leaders for making sure the exhibition was a success. He also thanked all the volunteers who helped with putting up the show, especially Tavistock Lions.
