Jimmy James ran youth clubs at Mary Tavy and Princetown and was a youth leader at the Tavistock Youth Centre in Chapel Street.
Mr James died last March, aged 53. The idea for a memorial tree in the Meadows was devised last year by friend Max Diment who said Mr James had helped many children and teenagers to develop into good future citizens of the town.
