WARD & Chowen, auctioneers at Tavistock Livestock Centre, report an entry of 412 Cattle and 88 Sheep for their recent April Fair sale. Trade for all classes of stock was slightly improved on the previous month's excellent sale. In the cattle section prices topped at £788 for a 24 mo South Devon steer from Messrs N H and M J Cole, Yelverton, who also sold a bunch of seven 24mo South Devon steers for £735. Heifers topped at £618 for three 23/24mo Charolais x from Mr P Maddaford of Bere Alston. Young cattle (0–14mo) sold to £600 twice; firstly for three 11/12mo South Devon x steers from Messrs H Vigers and Sons, Stowford; and secondly for two 12/14mo Charolais x steers from Messrs W and P Power and Son, Coryton. Similar aged heifers sold to £568 for an eleven mo Charolais x from Miss C A Uglow of Milton Abbot. Young bulls sold to £542 for a bunch of four 10/11mo Charolais x from Taviton Farms, Tavistock, who also had top price per kilo of 193ppk for two 9/11mo Charolais x steers which realised £385. Other notable store cattle prices included £712 for two 19/20mo Limousin steers from Mr W D Brown, Horsebridge; £518 for six 18mo Simmental x heifers from Roskilly Farms, Tavistock; £615 for four 21/22mo Blonde x heifers from Messrs K H Squire and Son, Coryton; £595 for six 21/22mo South Devon heifers from Mrs W L Prout, Milton Abbot and £440 for four 10mo Limousin x heifers for Mr B J Rendle, Cornwood. The sale commenced with the mature cattle which topped at £645 (93ppk) for a seven yo South Devon cow from Messrs S G Palmer and Sons, Peter Tavy. Top price per kilo was 103ppk for a three yo South Devon heifer which realised £578 from Messrs J and S Eggins, Yelverton. In the sheep pens prices topped at £74 for five full mouth double couples from Messrs S G Palmer and Sons, Peter Tavy. Store lambs topped at £57.00 for a pen from Mr S Bowden, Yelverton. The next sale of breeding/store cattle and sheep is the May Fair on Tuesday May 6.
