THERE has been good news and not such good news for people with mobility problems in the Tavistock area, according to the town's Access Group.

The group consists of local physically disabled people who work to improve the accessibility of shops and other premises in Tavistock.

Judith Williams, chairman, said the group was delighted that Boots in Duke Street had installed automatic doors with an internal ramp, after ten years of campaigning by the group.

And the Bedford Hotel in Plymouth Road planned to install an external lift at the back of the building.

The group had, however, been disappointed with the disabled toilet facilities at the new Guildhall car park block. Several alterations had had to be made and some were still needed.

The approach area to the toilets is to be finished later.

Anyone with any problems is asked to contact Ms Williams at 35 Chollacott Close, Tavistock.

Mrs Williams said the access group was about to publish the 2008 Access Guide and it was grateful to all the shops and businesses who had made alterations, provided ramps, put up hand rails and generally made life easier for those less mobile.

Tavistock Access Group will be holding its annual meeting on Monday, October 13 at Social Services, Abbey Rise in Tavistock at 6.30pm.

Everyone is welcome at the annual meeting, especially those willing to join the committee and help in the group's work.
