I DO not know Monty Montgomery (Letters, July 2) but I have seen him several times on his mobility scooter trips around Hatherleigh and Okehampton areas. We do, however, have something in common and that is a concern about the condition of the road between Jacobstowe and Abbeyford Woods.

That is what led me to write to the Area Engineer (North) of Devon County Council in February and March 2008 but very little has been done to improve the road surface since then.

When I recently suffered a riding accident at home, which left me with four broken vertebrae in my neck and other broken bones, my husband managed to drive me to Okehampton Hospital but I think you can imagine that the journey along that road was not a comfortable one. I have to say that the attention I received at Okehampton and Exeter hospitals was excellent and for that I sincerely thank all the emergency staff.

Many British and foreign visitors use this road as part of the Tarka Trail and National Cycle Route 27. No-one wants it to become a fast through road to Okehampton but if the surface is not improved soon I fear that it will be a danger to all road users.
