AN EXHIBITION of photographs by renowned Dartmoor photographer Chris Chapman and the late James Ravillious is going on show in Iddesleigh next week. The exhibition Nethercott: a celebration of 30 years was commissioned by the charity Farm for City Children, founded by Michael and Clare Morpurgo to mark three decades of giving inner-city children a taste of country life. Chris Chapman visited the farm near Iddesleigh over a period of six months between autumn 2005 and spring and the photographs provide an intimate portrait of daily life and capture children working alongside farmers David and Graham Ward and FFCC staff in all weathers. This new commission was a conscious reference to one made 30 years earlier. In 1976, Michael Morpurgo invited James Ravillious to illustrate the book All Around The Year. The resulting photographs, recording a year in the life of a farm, gave Ravillious the chance to add to the record he was making for the Beaford Archive of life in North Devon ? a record he worked on for more than 17 years. Together the photographs capture the charmed spirit of a place that, through times of massive change, remains as vital and necessary now as it ever was. The exhibition is open from 10am-4pm daily at the Northcote Hall in Iddesleigh on September 8-9. Admission is free.
