IN response to Cllr Brian Trew's letter last week, berating

small local traders for not opening over Bank Holiday — I

am one of those traders who didn't open.

Like the councillor, I saw how busy the town was and

would have relished the opportunity to welcome visitors

and locals to my shop.

However, last time we opened on a non-working day I had

a swift rebuke from my landlord, reminding me that it was

against the terms of my lease — my landlord is the town

council.

The councillor should also note that the largest number of

local traders is to be found in the Pannier Market, which is

rarely open on a Monday, let alone a Bank Holiday

Monday.

The Pannier Market is managed by the town council.

I therefore urge the councillor and his colleagues to

consider again whether it really does do its best to

promote local businesses.
