A FLEXI car is being sought for Bere Alston and Bere Ferrers.
The Bere Peninsula Transport Working Group was set up a couple of years ago with the aim of improving services in the area and keeping local people advised of the possibilities .
They are currently distributing new leaflets with details of various organisations — such as Shopmobility and where to borrow baby car seats.
Their latest plan is to have a 'flexi car' which will be at set locations at set times in both villages to coincide with the arrival of trains and buses, but inbetween times it will roam the peninsula as needed.
The cost to passengers will be reasonable — probably £1 for any journey within the peninsula — and the full fare will be subsidised by Devon County Council. It is hoped it may also be possible to run to Yelverton to connect with buses for Derriford Hospital.
All that is needed now is for someone to come forward who would be willing to undertake the contract. One tender has been received, but it was over the group's budget.
A private hire licence is needed, and the driver will be paid in full for all journeys undertaken — but will receive nothing when there are no bookings.
A spokesman for the group said that it should still provide a good income, and would provide a real service to local people. A partner scheme would be a possibility, with more than one driver sharing duties.
