THE hunt for this year?s Hatherleigh Carnival Queen is now underway. If you are aged over 13, live in the Hatherleigh area or belong to a Hatherleigh organisation and would like to be considered, you have until the end of the month to make an entry. Queen candidates are asked to contact secretary Mrs Mandy Wonnacott on 01837 810678 before April 30. This year, the royalty grants are to be increased from £100 to £130 and the queen will also receive 10% of her ticket sales. The carnival committee held its annual meeting on March 15, in the Old Schools, Hatherleigh. Twenty-three people attended with all present joining the committee. Voting for the officers took place and it was decided to maintain the status quo: Chair, Mark Reddaway; vice -chair, Mrs Shirley Dilling; secretary, Mrs Mandy Wonnacott; treasurer, Mrs Dawn Stevens; assistant treasurer, Mrs Alma Knight and press secretary, Mrs Cindy Squire. There are a number of carnival fundraising events leading up to the big day itself on November 11. A children?s disco in aid of the tar barrel fund is being held in the town hall on Friday, May 26. Other events include a coffee evening in the Square on Thursday, June 22, and the Island Park Summer Party on August 19.
