DELEGATES from the Tavistock Area Schools Council have returned from a half-term maths study tour — in Hungary.

Teachers from Tavistock College and primary school and from Lady Modiford School Walkhampton and St Andrew's Buckland Monachorum enjoyed a variety of activities related to the study.

The visit, to Budapest, was funded through the Teachers' International Professional development programme. Hungary has a long-standing reputation for outstanding maths education and many elements of the British National Numeracy Strategy are taken from Hungarian methods.

The group saw at first hand the high quality teaching and learning methods in many schools, including kindergarten, elementary and secondary schools. The week also included visits to the university, teaching training centres and a lengthy dialogue with the Hungarian Minister of Education.
