THE British Hen Welfare Trust, based in South Zeal, successfully re-homed 900 hens at the weekend.

The charity re-homed the birds in various locations across the country on Sunday (August 6), including 180 in Okehampton.

The hens are around 18-months-old when they are sent to slaughter because their egg laying has slowed down. The ex-battery hens cannot be saved unless they have homes to go to.

A spokesperson for the charity said: ‘During our re-homing we managed to find 900 hens a new home and we are so grateful to those who have helped us.’
