WARD and Chowen, auctioneers at Tavistock Livestock Centre, report a huge entry of 585 breeding and store cattle at their recent June Fair sale. The sale began with 11 breeding bulls which topped at £1,200 for a 21mo Pedigree Limousin for E A and D A Ellis, St Ives, this being closely followed by £1,100 for a three year-old pure-bred South Devon from R H Murrin, Bere Alston. An entry of 17 cows and calves topped £690 for a 9yo Simmental cow and her Simmental x steer calf at foot for G W Dingle, Tavistock. Fifteen in-calf heifers met a good trade, topping at £570 for a 39mo Simmental from E Schuttkacker and Sons, Bere Alston. An excellent entry of 525 store cattle were again in strong demand, selling to £698 for a 22mo Limousin x steer from W H Tucker and Son, Brentor. Heifers topped at £498 for 2 23/24mo Blonde x from T D Cunningham, Brentor. Cattle aged 15-20mo sold to £625 for 16mo Blonde x again from T D Cunningham with similar aged heifers selling to £440 for a 19mo Limousin x from A Kilfedder, Tavistock. Young cattle (0-14mo) sold to £600 for a 14mo Charolais x from B Shuttkacker and Sons, Bere Alston, with heifers selling to £440 for a 14mo South Devon x from P J and J A Rogers, Sydenham Damerel. Next sale of breeding/store cattle and sheep will be July Fair on Tuesday July 5.
