VISITORS to Tavistock Pannier Market could be forgiven for thinking they?d lost their way this weekend, when the traditional Victorian market is due to be transformed ? Western-style. Cowboys and Indians will be the name of the game as the market opens its doors on Sunday morning. All the traders will be in Western gear, while shoppers can stop and listen to songs from shows like Calamity Jane and Oklahoma! performed by members of Tavistock Musical Theatre Company. In addition, a visiting Western club will be providing a flavour of the old West for market customers. Mike Souttar, deputy market reeve, said: ?It?s all part of a big weekend in Tavistock, with the food festival happening in Bedford Square. ?One of the traders suggested we do it ? they are all backing it very enthusiastically and of course, our reeve Eddie is a born cowboy!? Mike said there will also be a variety of traders on the square to add to the fun. Inside the market there will be prizes for the best dressed boy and girl customer and there will be a demonstration of Italian cooking by Sponzi?s. ?It?s not so much a Spaghetti Western, more like Western spaghetti!? said Mike. Admission to Sunday?s Western-style market is free ? market staff extend a big thank you to the traders for supporting the idea and Tavistock Musical Theatre Company, who are currently rehearsing for their autumn production of Fiddler on the Roof.
