I READ with interest that various action groups and think tanks are taking on the awesome responsibility of inviting the local population to make use of the Portuguese drainaway, previously known as Bedford Square.
Don't worry! I have the definitive answer.
1. Install three or four coach parking bays and invite regular daily use. This will result in hundreds of willing shoppers being brought every week to the very epicentre of Tavistock's commercial area.
2. Feature a dozen or so adjacent car parking bays enabling both the elderly or infirm to park within yards of the shops and market stalls.
3. Widen the road area to four lanes, two in each direction, instead of the present single lane system, which tends to clog up every time someone sneezes.
4. Expand the pick-up, dropping off areas, to encourage widespread use at all times of day.
5. Encourage market traders to use these new facilities in order to load and unload at appropriate times.
6. Attempt to keep the surface reasonably level, which will help to avoid falls and reduce the obvious dangers when icy conditions prevail.
I can promise, without fear of contradiction that this system will definitely work.
In fact, I prophesy a vibrant, hustle and bustle, active, Bedford Square, around which the commercial future and fortune of both business proprietors and general populace should thrive.
Please! Please! No accolades. A donation to the failed bureaucrats' rehabilitation fund will suffice.
