SOME years have now passed since considerable capital was expended on the area at the far end of the Mill Road car park. Can one ask what the purpose was?
At first it looked as though it was an example of horticultural practice, but since it has developed beyond that and has gone on to an example of misplaced arboricultural effort verging on a maturing memorial to the deprivations of urban renewal.
In a previous issue of your newspaper we were told that the waterwheel had stopped due to the need for essential repairs and visitors by the coachload were disappointed. But with a little ingenuity the area that I have referred to could be turned into a small wildlife sanctuary where invertebrates and vermin are on view.
On the other hand, it could be given a new lease of life as ?a folly? dedicated to the responsible officer at West Devon whose creation the scheme was!
Give it a further appeal by having a replica of the three farmers that are portrayed in Hatherleigh, but in Okehampton?s case, a statue of three councillors scratching their heads as to what to do next.
