A WEST Devon hotel has won an ?Oscar? from the hotel industry thanks to its character and quality. The Dartmoor Inn, at Lydford, was awarded the prestigious César Award and was named newcomer of the year in the Good Hotel Guide?s 2007 edition of ?the Guide?, just published . The hotel, owned by Karen and Philip Burgess, has been recognised for its outstanding service to its guests. Desmond Balmer, joint editor, said the Dartmoor Inn reflected the qualities his readers were seeking. It was run in ?hands-on style by passionate owners? and offered ?excellent service and fine food.? Inspectors from the Guide found the owners to be among the nicest hoteliers they had come across. Mr Balmer said the inspectors were impressed by Mr and Mrs Burgess?s flair, dedication and talent: ?Dinner was much admired, and breakfast was rated as among the best anywhere.? Mr and Mrs Burgess said they were thrilled with their award, as they have been offering rooms for only 18 months. The inn lets out only three rooms, allowing staff to provide a personal touch for guests. Mr Burgess, a chef with 30 years experience, prides himself on his breakfasts which have seen the inn shortlisted for the Great British Breakfast award, due to be announced later this month. Karen Burgess said: ?When we bought the inn, the bedrooms had not changed since I had stayed there for childhood holidays in the 1960s. Restyling them gave us another way of helping people feel more comfortable and welcome. ?We did not do this to win an award, but receiving it has given us both an incredible sense of achievement and is confirmation that we are getting closer to providing people with what they want.?
