TAVISTOCK Tennis Club held the finals of its annual club tournaments for seniors last Saturday with the juniors being held the previous week. Both were on hot days and there were some new faces both winners and runners up. Overall matches were competitive and to a good standard with some outstanding performances. There was a good turnout of spectators. In the seniors, Babette Jackson and Terry Lanchbery both were in three finals, each winning two. It was fortuitous that as singles winners they had been paired for the mixed doubles and were nearing exhaustion by the end of the day after playing seven sets each. In the juniors, Sarah Lucas reached three finals winning two matches and also entered the ladies? singles event, losing in the final, no mean achievement for someone so young. Ashley Clarke performed well in reaching two finals winning one. Tournament results ? Men?s singles: Terry Lanchbery beat Paddy Shephard 7-5, 6-4, in a close match with hard hitting and deft shots. Ladies? singles: Babette Jackson beat Sarah Lucas 6-0, 7-5 - after a slow start Sarah changed tactics and came close at one stage in winning the second set. Ladies? doubles: Olga Rogers/Jenny Robins beat Babette/Claudine Sparks 3-6, 6-0, 7-5, coming back strongly after dropping the first set, in a match with long rallies with 25 strokes for one point. Men?s doubles: Bill Sparks/David Anning beat Terry/John Jackson 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 also where the winners came back from a set down. This was a typical hard hitting match, a close contest and taking three match points to win. Mixed doubles (veterans): Babette/Terry beat Roma McMahon/Rick Read 6-4, 6-3 in a good match. Juniors: Boys U18: Josh Brown beat Ashley Clarke 6-0, 6-1, closer than the score depicts. Girls U18; Sarah Lucas beat Lizzie Beckett 6-3, 6-1. Boys U15: Ashley Clarke beat Matthew Smith 6-2. Girls U15: Sarah Lucas beat Lizzie Beckett 6-1, meeting for the second time in the singles events. Boys U13: Peter Snell beat Owen Drags 6-0. Girls U13: Won by Lizzie Brown in a round robin match of one set each with Cammila Pinkney and Bebbie Allan. U18 only (mixed doubles): Ashley Rice/Aidan Mason beat Sarah/Tom Thornberry 6-3, 6-3. The boys? captain cup went to Ashley Rice for his stirring work with juniors, the girls? captain cup to Sarah, most improved player jointly to Phil Snell and Sarah, and player of the year to Ashley Rice. It is hoped to have the traditional parents v children tournament later in the season. President Norma Woodcock with chairman Mike Prout presented the trophies and the day ended with a barbecue organised by Viv and Mike Iles with assistance from Barbara and Rod Watson.
