THREE winners of an award marking the achievements of individuals in West Devon are being honoured at a prestigious event next month.
This is the second year that the West Devon Mayoral Awards have been held to promote the good work of key residents and organisations in the borough.
There were many nominations for this year?s awards and West Devon mayor Cllr Peter Hill said it was very difficult to choose the worthy winners.
The first category, to a young person under the age of 18, was awarded jointly.
Thirteen-year-old Ashley Cackett from Tavistock fought off stiff competition to win the national under 16s boys field archery championship this year.
Ashley, who was nominated by his coach Lez James, won the award for his hard work, dedication and achievement.
He started archery when he was just eight years old and, says Mr James, works and trains very hard.
Cllr Hill said: ?Ashley is a fine example to other young people by proving that determination and an ability to put in the necessary hard training reaps its rewards.?
The young chairman of Tavistock?s Youth Café group, David Johnson, 17, is the other joint winner for his work in the community and on behalf of young people in the borough.
His nominator, Guy Talbot, secretary of the Tavistock Chamber of Commerce, describes David as ?a truly remarkable young man?.
David has worked tirelessly towards a youth café for the town and has also joined the Dartmoor Rescue Team as part of his Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award.
David who lives in Tavistock, is a keen outdoor enthusiast and currently is involved in canoe training.
Cllr Hill said: ?David is an extremely good advert for the work carried out by young people today and is a role model for many.?
The second award, to an individual over 18 or firm/organisation, goes to Colin Harris for his work in the community.
Colin is the West Devon Community Watch representative, chairman of Devon & Cornwall Community Watch Association, marketing officer for Devon & Cornwall Crimestoppers Trust and a member of the South West Regional Neighbourhood Watch Forum.
He is also a parish councillor and secretary to Lewdown Recreation-Youth Sports Committee.
Cllr Hill said that he was delighted at the high standard of entries.
?It?s heartening to know that so many people are out there in West Devon carrying out such a lot of good work.?
