TAVISTOCK Cricket Club hosted the Premiership round of 20/20 cricket last Sunday, with keenly contested cricket the order of the day. The weather stayed fine and six teams in their coloured kits with red stumps, black pads and a white ball fought hard to progress to the final. Tavistock beat Whitchurch and Bridestowe to come through their group, while Lewdown?s youthful side beat Lydford and the Ordulph Taverners to qualify from their section ? amazingly not losing a wicket in either game. The final was played in great spirit by the two teams. Lewdown gave lots of their players an opportunity to perform, while Tavistock bowled nine of their side. Two guest players from Tavistock, Dominic Scaglioni and Josh Stephens, aged 13 and 14 respectively, batted alongside Ed Squire to post a respectable 111. Squire?s 50 was well paced, while the two youngsters scored 16 a-piece. Tavistock?s reply was built around Dave Downham, whose 49 not out steadied the ship when wickets were tumbling. Young Ben Williams and James McGahey kept Lewdown in the hunt with their steady wicket-taking, while James? father John helped to take Tavistock over the line for a four-wicket victory. Tony Kaminski of Kaminski Property Rentals, sponsors of the event, presented the trophies and medals, with Ed Squire winning the ?man of the match? award. Special mention must be made of Harry Gearing, 17 year old Lewdown captain, whose leadership, attitude and sportsmanship showed great maturity, well beyond his young age. Andrew Jarman, chairman of Tavistock Cricket Club, expressed his thanks to all the participating teams as well as the many helpers whose combined efforts helped make it such an enjoyable day for players and spectators alike. Special mention should go to the tea ladies who prepared over 100 lunches and teas. ?This has become an annual event we all look forward to, and we hope to stage both the Championship and Premiership competitions again next season,? said Andrew. l Main picture above: All the teams who took part in the Tavistock and district 20/20 competition Premiership Trophy: Bridestowe, Ordulph, Whitchurch, Lydford, Tavistock and Lewdown.
