THE Youth Hostel Association Okehampton is one of 107 youth hostels throughout England and Wales that will be throwing its doors open to the local community on Sunday as part of its annual celebrations for YHA Day 2015.

The day will provide the local community and passing walkers and cyclists the opportunity to come inside and see what YHA Okehampton and Adventure Okehampton have to offer.

John Elson, managing director for Adventure Okehampton, said: ‘We are extremely happy to be a hub event for YHA Day 2015 in the South West region.  As an enterprise hostel we have a partnership with YHA to deliver a great place to stay and we also provide an active adventure programme for all types of visitor, from local residents, schools, scout groups, rugby teams and team building for industry. As a member of the Okehampton Chamber of Trade, we want to bring people to Okehampton to show them a great town with a wonderful community spirit.’

On the day there is a jam packed schedule of activities, including archery, climbing wall, bush craft, circus skills, pizza making workshops and cake decorating and there will be a barbeque and refreshments available. Musical entertainment is also there with a Samba band.

YHA Okehampton is developed within the old railway goods shed at Okehampton Station, on the long-lost Exeter-Okehampton-Plymouth line. YHA Okehampton Bracken Tor has an Arts and Craft house built in 1908 when Castle Drogo was being built, as well as the old Filter House of the waterworks which preceeded Meldon Reservoir. YHA Dartmoor will also have their doors open, as they are a station on the Moor-2-Sea cycle race passing through Bellever.
