PLAYERS, officials and supporters observed a minute's silence on Saturday in memory of Mike Halfyard, who died recently, before the kick off of the 14th Horrabridge Football Twinning Club five -a-side tournament at Fillace Park on Saturday.

Mike, a friend of many involved in the tournament was a member of the twinning committee.

Twenty teams divided into four groups kicked off the first matches of what organisers say, was one of the most keenly contested tournaments yet. Group A consisted of local sides Crapstone I, Grub Up Tavistock, Roborough, along with Lakeside, and Kings Tamerton CA III; Group B - Horrabridge II, Plympton Legion I, last years winners Cheyrle Burdett Photography, Manadon I, and Western Mortgage Services; Group C Horrabridge Sunday team, Horrabridge U 18s, Kings Tamerton II, Efford Utd I and Manadon II; group D Horrabridge I, Crapstone II, Efford Utd II, Plympton Legion II and Kings Tamerton I.

None of the local teams progressed to the Champions cup which was contested by Lakeside who claimed top spot in group A followed by Kings Tamerton III; group B winners were Legion I along with Western Mortgage Services. Efford Utd I and Manadon II were first and second respectively in group C with Efford Utd II and Legion II progressing from group D. However local teams were better represented in the Supplementary Cup consisting of the third and fourth placed teams of each group.

Group A Crapstone I and Roborough, Group B, Cheyrle Burdett and Horrabridge II, Group C, Horrabridge Suns and Kings Tamerton II and in Group D Kings Tamerton I and Horrabridge I.

The Champion's semis ended with Efford Utd I defeating Kings Tamerton III and in an epic encounter between two fine footballing teams Legion I finally got the better of Lakeside with penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Supplementary semis saw both local representatives go out, and Cheyrle Burdett and Kings Tamerton I into the final - Cheyrle beating Crapstone I 3-1 and King's Tamerton beat Horrabridge I 1-0.

In the Champions final Legion I were 2-0 down before having a player sent off. They pulled a goal back but Efford added two further goals to deservedly win the Colebrook Chippy Champions Cup while Legion I received the Tavistock Hire Centre runners up trophy for the second year running.

Kings Tamerton I were London Inn Horrabridge Supplementary cup winners beating Cheyle Burdett by 2-0 who took home the Bidders Butchers Yelverton runners Up trophy.
