ONE of West Devon's most famous sons is all set to be remembered at an annual gathering later this month.
The Sabine Baring-Gould Appreciation Society will be holding their 2008 annual gathering on Saturday, September 27 and Sunday, September 28.
This year, the society will be focussing on the novel, John Herring, closely following the details and topography of the story as it ranges from South Zeal to Launceston and Boscastle.
Roger Bristow, from the society, said: 'Without exception, all the localities mentioned in the novel are "real" places and readily identifiable.'
The event starts at 9.30am on the Saturday morning with a series of talks in South Zeal village hall by a selection of experts who will cover everything from Nymet Savages, cromlechs and mining scams.
This will be followed later in the day by a visit to the scene of one such mining scam, a nearby cromlech and one of the houses mentioned in the novel.
The next day will see the society travelling by mini-coach to, among others, Dockacre, Welltown Manor and Trecarrell Manor.
Non-members of the society are welcome to attend and should call Roger Bristow on 01363 84815.
