VILLAGERS from Spreyton were reassured last week that much-needed affordable housing under construction in the village will be for local young people.

Officers from West Devon Homes attended a meeting of Spreyton Parish Council last Wednesday, which was well attended by villagers keen to hear the latest on the scheme.

Bob Fish and Alex Everitt of West Devon Homes were able to share the good news that contractors are ahead of schedule and the scheme to build four homes on land adjoining Part Coffins Farms should be finished in time for tenants to move in before Christmas.

Mr Fish said: 'Planning policy in rural areas, makes it difficult to build houses but thanks to the support of the borough and parish council we have been able to build four houses for the local community to meet some of the acute housing need.'

Mr Fish said the response from most people at the meeting was positive.

'I think most people went away fairly happy and a number of people have already registered on the list who do have a strong connection with the village,' he said.

Residents were told enough names had already been put forward on the housing list, to ensure that the properties — two two-bedroom and two three-bedroom houses — would be let to those living and working in the parish or with local connections.

Mr Fish said the houses would be let on an assured secure tenancy, to help encourage stability in local affordable housing.

Mr Fish said there was potential to do more to provide affordable housing in the future where the need was identified.

The community in Spreyton has been fighting for affordable housing provision for several years to help keep young people in the village in spite of soaring house prices.

The lack of affordable housing and desperate need for young families to keep the school and other community facilities viable was what inspired Spreyton Parish Council to begin pushing for action.
