Devon League

Whitchurch v Feniton

FOLLOWING a heavy downpour that delayed the start, home side Whitchurch won the toss and invited Feniton to bat.

Cann and Tucker started well despite fine bowling from MacDougall who was unlucky not to take a wicket.

Tucker (32) was the first to be dismissed, however, Cann continued his strokeplay to make 55 runs.

Feniton stepped up the pace with Fever producing a rapid 39, however, this allowed bowler Tom Ingram to capitalise, returning figures of 3 for 120 at the close, Feniton posting a total of 175 for 6.

Whitchurch's upper order struggled against Feniton's Bright (2-24) and Smith (3-31). A fifth wicket partnership of 48 between colts Richard Hall (26) and Peter Freedman (21) kept Whitchurch in the hunt for an improbable victory.

Unfortunately, as Whitchurch tried to accelerate the run rate the wickets started to fall, primarily to Cann (3-21) and Smith (3-31). With three overs left the home side shut up shop, settling for a draw and 7 points on 128-8.

This week Whitchurch are home again to Yealmpton.

Palladium U13 League Cup

semi-final

Whitchurch U13s pulled off an excellent victory in the semi final of the cup, beating Plympton by 30 runs.

Whitchurch batted first and following the loss of opener Gruitt (8), settled down to punish the Plympton bowling with Crawford scoring an excellent 85. Whitchurch closed on 144 for 1.

The Plympton innings got off to a good start with Garland striking a good 44 runs before being skittled out by Lane, who returned the best bowling figures of 2 for 13. After this Plympton struggled to contain the Whitchurch bowlers with the exception of Skinner (27 not out), finally closing on 114 for 7.

Touring game

Whitchurch Wayfarers v Ashstead

WHITCHURCH hosted touring side Ashstead on Thursday in what proved to be a low scoring but enjoyable game.

Ashstead batted first and quickly looked to be in trouble with their opener Graham (34) and Dartnell (18) being the only batsmen to offer any resistance to the Whitchurch bowlers.

Colt, Richard Hall, bowled well to leave the field with the best bowling figures of 5 or 18 with Nick Sweet picking up 2 for 40.

In reply, Whitchurch opener E Rae started to recover his form with a good knock of 46 not out, assisted by a swift 12 runs from S Wood.

The Ashstead bowlers Laudy (2-17) and Stella (2-29) managed the best bowling figures as they struggled to defend the rather low total.

Whitchurch won by five wickets.
