A WEST Devon holiday park has been named as one of the best in Britain, when it comes to offering sustainable holidays, reaching the finals of the 2013 Green Tourism Gold Star Awards.

Woodovis Park near Gulworthy has beaten off competition from thousands of contenders to be shortlisted for the Best Holiday Park category, one of the top three in the UK.

The results will be announced at the first Green Tourism Conference to be held on Friday, November 8 in Bristol, during Green Tourism Week.

One of the highest scoring gold-ranked holiday parks graded during 2012, Woodovis Park has also had to demonstrate its support of a local sustainable business in order to qualify, choosing to champion the Cornish Crisp Company from Kelly Bray which stocks the onsite shop.

Owners John and Dorothy Lewis have introduced a raft of measures over the past few years to ensure holidaymakers enjoy a more sustainable holiday option, from the solar heated swimming pool to the 160ft bore-hole.

Other measures include dedicated wildlife corridors and a touch screen information board, with details on everything from local attractions and wildlife to weather, significantly reducing the number of paper leaflets on site.

Speaking about their place in the finals, John Lewis said: 'We're lucky enough to live in one of the most beautiful parts of the UK and we love sharing this with visitors, but it's essential that tourism doesn't detract from this stunning environment.

'It's fantastic to have our commitment to delivering sustainable holidays recognised and we're thrilled to be one of the top three holiday parks in the UK.'
