CALLINGTON’S historic honey fair has been cancelled this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Callington and District Lions, which organises the annual family event, announced that the 2020 fair had been cancelled, along with all the organisation’s other events scheduled for this year.
Callington’s incoming Lion president Karen Toft said that it was with great reluctance that, at a recent committee meeting, it had been agreed by all that the fair should be cancelled.
‘This was due to various factors including the Cornwall Beekeepers being unable to attend and Lions International not being able to achieve adequate insurance cover; it is also understood that Rowlands Fair would not be coming this year.’
Other events cancelled include the 2020 table top sales and bingo sessions.
The next fair will take place on the first Wednesday of October 2021.
Karen added that it was ‘not all bad news’ as Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) were donating a total of £14,360 to Cornwall and Devon Air Ambulances to purchase vital Covid-19 equipment. The money was being provided from a total of £160,000 being donated to all the UK air ambulances from their Central Emergency Fund.
She also confirmed that the other services provided by Lions would be continuing, including the Covid-19 grocery and medical deliveries, Plymouth Soup Run, wheelchair provision and similar items.
