A WEST Devon woman is hooked on walking after two hip replacements — even after being told by doctors she would not be able to walk long distances.

Tavistock resident Gillian Wright had her first hip replaced in November 2009, and her second replaced just ten weeks later in January 2010, but only a few months later she was out and about trekking across the moors.

Gillian said: 'The doctors told me I'd probably be able to walk about three miles — but the surgeon knows I won't do what I am told — and 10 months after my operation I walked with my husband John, 32 miles across Dartmoor from Okehampton to Princetown and then Princetown to Ivybridge.

'Since then I have conquered all but eight of the Dartmoor tors, which I intend to complete this month.'

Gillian is keen for everyone to get out and about on the moor: 'Get out there because Dartmoor is so exciting and interesting. There are lots of photo opportunities, from ancient Dartmoor crosses, trig points, antiquities and even different gate latches, river and stream crosses and fungi.'
