THE second stage of the Tavistock Junior Open Tennis Tournament, hosted by the club took place over the weekend when all the semi finals and finals were completed despite intermittent poor weather at times. The first stage took place the previous week. For the second year running this was a very successful tournament in a split form where there was generally a high standard of play at all levels and was well supported. Players from the Tavistock area did well with five winners. Results: Boys? singles: 18U main event; winner John Ellmer, Ivybridge, v Josh Brown, Tavistock, w/o where it was unfortunate that Josh was unable to play due to injury in a previous match. Consolation event; winner Phil Webb, Tavistock, v Ben Graham, Plymouth 7-6(7-5), 6-4. 16U main; winner Ryan Colmer, Ivybridge, v Josh Brown at 1-2 who unfortunately had to retire due to injury. Consolation; winner Phil Webb v Philip Snell, Tavistock, 6-1, 6-3. 14U main; winner Nathan Chung-Penny, Saltash, v Ryan Colmer 7-6(7-4), 2-6, 7-5. Consolation; winner Harry Peace, Exeter, v John Mullin, Plymouth, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2. 12U main event; winner Ben Ward, Torpoint, v Jake Horton, Callington, 6-0, 6-2. Consolation; winner Charles Bury, Tavistock, v Edward Dyson, Exeter, 6-7(2-7), 6-1, (10-6). Boys doubles (no Consolation) 16U winners Nathan Chung-Penny/Ben Ward v Rhys Dunford, Plymouth/Patrick Wilson, Plymouth, 6-4, 6-2. 12U winners Seb Dartnell, Plymouth/Matthew Hooper, Plymouth, v Alex Bond, Bishopsteignton/Matthew Jones 6-4, 6-1. Girls singles. 16U main; winner Sarah Lucas, Tavistock, v Stephanie Shenton, Torquay, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. By general consensus this was the outstanding match of the tournament with a high standard of play and long pulsating rallies both players giving their all. It lasted 2hrs 50mins. Girls doubles (no Consolation); 16U winners Christina/Rebecca Caideira,Gunnislake, v Elizabeth Brown/Robyn Osborne,Okehampton, 6-3, 6-4. 12U winners Mia Loye/Stephanie Ellmer v Charlotte Sandy,Liskeard/Penny Tilsley 6-2, 6-4. Trophies were presented by Club president, Norma Wookcock who expressed her thanks to Mary Bayliss, Referee, Plymouth LTA for arranging the tournament to run so smoothly, to Kylie Martin for all her dedicated work with the organisation and to the many others who had helped to make it such a successful event.
