THE success of the Easter funfair held in Tavistock's Meadows may spark a new entertainment attraction for the park this summer.

Members of the town council's properties committee last week praised the way the Funlands Fair had been run. Town works superintendent Wayne Southall said the ground where the fair had stood had been re-instated satisfactorily.

He said the fair stuck 'rigidly' to the agreed closing time of 9pm each evening, to keep noise pollution down.

Mr Southall said: 'The fair has been run to an exceptional standard and public feedback appears to be positive.

'It is hoped this will now become an annual event with Funlands, which provides a balance of a reasonable income to the town council, for an area of land rarely used, also providing an amenity for the community.'

Mr Southall said feedback had been so good, he had now had preliminary discussions about the organisation of a circus in the same area of the Meadows, to be held in July, based on the same terms and conditions as the fair.

Cllr Mandy Govier said: 'It was one of the best organised fairs I've ever seen — and I think there could even be lessons to be learned from it as far as Goose Fair is concerned.

'People were checked as they came in for drinks, the security was excellent, and it was lovely to see there were quite a lot of young families there, as opposed to teenagers.'

Cllr Jenny Metcalf said some people had complained to her that it was not appropriate for the fair to be held during Holy Week — but councillors agreed that the overwhelming reaction from the public had been positive.

The committee backed Cllr Govier's proposal that the idea of a circus in July be pursued.

The decision was due to be ratified by the full council at its meeting on Tuesday night.
