A STUNNING design to convert an old Methodist chapel in Calstock has won a Tavistock architect a special commendation.

Steve Whettem was presented with a Delabole slate plaque at a ceremony near Truro last week for his work in turning the old chapel on Sand Hill into a spectacular home for Harry Chambers' Peterloo Poets.

Terry Knight, chairman of the Cornish Buildings Group which makes the awards each year, said: 'We were most impressed with the stunning design by the architect Stephen Whettem, which enables an imaginative re-use of this building.'

Mr Whettem, who was inspired by the fabulous Tamar Valley setting, said: 'I'm delighted that the project has been recognised by the Cornish Buildings Group.

'It was especially enjoyable to work on because of the team spirit that existed between all those involved, particularly the Chambers and the contractors Cooper Construction of Plymouth, who did an excellent job.'

He also paid tribute to English Heritage, which not only granted permission for the conversion of the listed building, but embraced the idea wholeheartedly, even the enormous plate-glass window opening out over the Tamar Valley from the chapel's eyrie.

'What makes it is the window, obviously,' said Harry Chambers. 'It really makes it an artists' building rather than a chapel.

'The building is superb and I wouldn't swap it for anything. It has a good feel.'

As well as being the home for the Peterloo Poets publishing business, the building is being used more and more for performance events.

Last week, nationally-renowned classical guitarist Alison Smith gave a recital as part of the Calstock Festival to a packed house and coming up later this month there will be a poetry and jazz café.
