TAVISTOCK's world record holder, Adam Holland, will be appearing on national TV later this month, after being filmed and interviewed by BBC Breakfast sports reporter Mike Bushell last week.
Adam, 24 on Saturday, last October became the youngest person in the world to complete 100 marathons. And he made a huge impression on the broadcaster, who is himself running in this year's London Marathon.
Mike said: 'Adam is unique — a truly inspirational young man, who has shown what sport can do for us all.
'What's remarkable is he has a normal life, a normal job and yet has still shown the professional full-time athletes how it's done by breaking the world record.'
Adam was filmed at Pillar's in town, where he works. He was also featured running on the moor and with the children who regularly attend his Wednesday evening junior running club.
Mike said Adam's story was 'the sort you normally only find in Disneyland or fairytales'.
'I love the fact that he eats sweets and has a normal job, as it means we can all relate to him — he's not elitist at all,' said Mike.
'Actually, it's frightening what time he could do if he did train full-time and turn professional — he is only 20 minutes outside the Olympic qualifying time at the moment.
'To see him passing on his enthusiasm for marathons and running to children as young as six and seven is wonderful.
'To them quite rightly he is a hero and and an idol and with him as a role model, their lives will be so much richer.
'The people of Tavistock know what a special athlete they have in their town and it's about time the rest of the world sat up and took notice.'
Adam is due back in the UK today, after spending a week at an athlete's training camp in Lanzarote — the first time he has ever been professionally coached.
Adam's interview with Mike may be broadcast this Saturday on BBC Breakfast News, or on March 26.
l The junior running club meets near the green hut in the Meadows at 5pm on Wednesdays. For more information call Adam Holland on 07810 441709 or Mhairi McCall on 07803 594962.
